HYDERABAD: Microsoft launched its largest data center in India on Thursday, a sprawling new facility in Hyderabad that expands its cloud regions in the country to four and deepens a bet on a market with over a billion internet users and one of the world's deepest pools of tech talent. The India South Central hub adds to existing centers in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai, cementing Microsoft's position as the country's largest cloud-computing provider.
The Windows maker said Azure, its cloud arm, has posted double-digit revenue increases in India for the last two years, and the new facility is designed to keep that growth going. "Creating value with AI requires trusted infrastructure close to where data lives, teams work and decisions are made," Microsoft India President Puneet Chandok said, calling the Hyderabad hub "a critical part of that foundation." The company also operates two data centers in partnership with Mukesh Ambani's Jio.
Early users of the new region include Adani Group and HDFC Bank, both of which are racing to embed AI into their operations. Rivals Alphabet and Amazon are also pouring money into Indian data center capacity, drawn by the same large potential pool of AI users. Microsoft's total India investment commitment now stands at about $20.5 billion, a sum that underscores how seriously hyperscalers view the subcontinent as the next major AI frontier.
Not everything has been frictionless. Environmentalists have accused authorities of fast-tracking a planned Google data center hub in India without adequately weighing risks to water supplies and wildlife, allegations the government rejects. As the buildout accelerates, the tension between AI ambitions and resource constraints is beginning to surface in India much as it already has in the United States and Australia.
